How I Get Your Website Linked in Google's AI Answers
On October 15, 2026, Google added more links to AI Mode and AI Overviews and started testing a top section for official websites. I build your site to be one of those official sources.
Google changed how links show up in its AI answers on October 15, 2026. AI Mode and AI Overviews now place more links inside the answer text and show them higher up. Google is also testing a section at the top of some answers for official websites. I build your website to be one of those official sources.
What Did Google Change on October 15?
Hema Budaraju, a vice president of product management at Google, posted the update on Google's blog. Google says it has added more inline links, which are links set into words or phrases of an AI answer, and it shows them higher in answers more often. Links at the end of some answers now get image thumbnails and a design that's easier to click. Carousels of timely news articles are spreading to more locations and languages.
The part I care most about is a test. Search Engine Land's Barry Schwartz reported that when only a few official places on the web cover a task or a piece of information, Google will show those links in their own section at the top of the AI answer. Google says it will add a short note on why each link is useful. Google calls the official sources section a test, so you may not see it yet.
Schwartz also pointed out that Search Console still doesn't show click data for these AI features. That means site owners can't yet see how many people click the new links. I'd still want your business to be the linked source.
Why Does an Official Page Matter for Your Business?
Your buyers ask task questions before they hire you, like how to book and whether you serve their town. The official answer to each one lives on your own website. When your site has no clear page for a question, Google has nothing official from you to link. My read is that Google is more likely to link a directory or a review site instead.
Google's own guidance points the same way. Its page on helpful content, updated October 5, 2026, asks whether your content shows "first-hand expertise and a depth of knowledge." It says trust is the most important part of what Google calls E-E-A-T. It also warns against content "made primarily to gain search engine rankings."
You already have first-hand expertise in your own business. A directory listing can't copy what you know about your own work.
How Do I Get Businesses Linked in Google's AI Answers?
I call my approach the official page method. I start with the questions buyers ask before they hire you. Then I make sure each question has one clear page on your site that answers it, written in plain words with your name and real details.
I run the official page method on my own businesses first. Beak School is my online parrot training school, and Beauty of Birds is a bird information site that's been online since 1997. I rebuilt both in 2026 with AI, from the websites to the email and ads. When a parrot owner asks Google how Beak School teaches, I want Google to find a Beak School page that answers that exact question.
Then I build the same setup for clients, including websites, landing pages, lead magnets, sales funnels, email and ad creative. Each client gets the same official page method I use on Beak School.
The second piece is your Google Business Profile. Google's help page on local ranking says a complete profile helps Google match you to the right searches. It says reviews and links to your business help show how well known you are. It also says you should reply to reviews, because a reply "shows that you value their feedback."
I'm direct with every client about the limit. Google's help page says "There's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google." Nobody can promise you a spot in an AI answer. What I can do is make your website and your profile the clearest official source for your business, so Google has a good reason to link you.
What Should You Do This Week?
- Write down the five questions customers ask most before they hire you.
- Ask each question in Google AI Mode and note which websites get linked in the answer.
- For any question your site doesn't answer on its own page, write that page. Use plain words and your real prices and service area.
- Put your name and a short bio on those pages. Google's guidance asks whether it's "self-evident" to visitors who wrote your content.
- Open your Google Business Profile, fill in every field you can, and reply to your recent reviews.
Step three takes the longest. It's also the step I spend the most time on with clients.
What Can You Ignore?
You can skip the news carousels. Google built them to show timely articles, and few local businesses publish news. You can also skip the creator profile test for now, since Google is testing it only on video results in AI Mode.
Ignore anyone who says they can pay their way into an AI answer for you. Google's local help page says there's no way to pay for a better local ranking, and I treat any promise about AI answers with the same doubt.
Also skip the urge to crank out dozens of thin pages. Google's helpful content page flags "using generative AI to produce large amounts of text without manual oversight" as low effort. I use AI to build fast, and I check every page before it goes live.
Where Do You Stand Right Now?
Before you write new pages, find out whether AI tools already name you. The AI Visibility Tracker checks whether AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity name your business when buyers ask who to hire. You can run the free AI Visibility Check here in about 60 seconds, with no credit card. If you want me to look at your results and build your official pages with you, book a call.
