Did Your Website Traffic Drop This Month?

A dip in your October numbers may come from a tracking change. This is how I tell a reporting change from lost customers before I touch a site.

If your website traffic looks down this month, check your report before you change your site. After OpenAI started rolling out GPT-6 on October 7, 2026, many clicks from ChatGPT arrived with no tag and no referrer, so analytics tools counted them as Direct. And as of October 19, Google has announced no new October update.

What changed in ChatGPT's links?

OpenAI's release notes say GPT-6 with Intelligent UI started rolling out to Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise on October 7, 2026, with Free and Go set to follow the next day. Soon after, Adobe's Cedric Huesler noticed that links out of ChatGPT had lost the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag. OpenAI's own publisher FAQ says ChatGPT "automatically includes the UTM parameter utm_source=chatgpt.com" in referral links. Analytics tools spot a ChatGPT visit by that tag or by a chatgpt.com referrer. ChatGPT's links lost both, so each of those visits looked like someone typed your web address by hand.

Search Engine Land reported the numbers on October 15. Huesler looked at about 500 pages where ChatGPT had made up at least 5% of visits. He compared October 9 to 13 with the week before. ChatGPT visits to those pages fell by about 31,000 a day, and Direct visits to the same pages rose by about 26,000 a day. Two-thirds of the pages that lost ChatGPT visits saw Direct go up.

Huesler says OpenAI told him on October 14 that the missing tag was a known bug from the GPT-6 rollout, according to WISLR. OpenAI hasn't commented publicly. WISLR reports a fix began reaching users on October 15, and its October 16 test found the tag back on every link, with still no referrer. With no referrer, the tag is the only way your analytics can spot these visits right now.

Did you lose buyers or just lose the label?

For a lot of pages, the label is what went missing. Huesler's numbers show most of the drop in ChatGPT visits coming back as Direct. But WISLR saw a split on one store it measures. Lost visits to support and how-to pages came back as Direct. Lost visits to product pages didn't come back for US visitors, and only about half came back for visitors outside the US.

WISLR also found ChatGPT started putting "Shop at" buttons under products in shopping answers on October 10. In four days of tracking across four brands, 56% of those buttons led to big-box stores and about 5% to the brand's own store. WISLR calls those exact figures provisional. So if you sell products, a drop on your product pages deserves a closer look than a drop on your blog posts.

Is Google running an update right now?

Not one Google has announced. Search Engine Watch checked the Google Search Status Dashboard on October 19, 2026, and found no October update listed. The September 2026 spam update started September 24 and finished October 8. The last core update was the May 2026 core update, which began May 21.

Site owners on the WebmasterWorld forum are still guessing. One wrote on October 19, "Seems like a Core update on the way." Search Engine Watch says the most specific complaints are about Discover and Google News. The same report suggests the gap some owners see between visibility and clicks may come from other causes, such as more AI Overviews, more ads or bot traffic in analytics. A quiet dashboard means nobody has a confirmed cause to point at yet.

Why does this matter for your business?

The worst move you can make this month is to rewrite pages that were working because one chart dipped. If you believe ChatGPT stopped sending you buyers, you might cut the pages it was quoting. You might also pull money from the work that got your business named in AI answers. Both of those choices could rest on a counting error.

A drop in ChatGPT visits next to a jump in Direct visits can also make it look like more people are typing your web address from memory. If you read the Direct jump as a win for your brand, you'll credit the wrong thing.

When a client tells me their traffic is down, I split the numbers by source and by page before I touch anything. I run the same check on my own sites, Beak School and Beauty of Birds. The split shows me whether buyers left or the report changed. If ChatGPT fell and Direct rose by about the same amount on the same pages, I leave those pages alone. If product pages fell and nothing rose to match, I dig into how ChatGPT answers shopping questions in that category.

What should you do this week?

  1. Open Google Analytics, go to traffic by source, and compare October 8 to 14 with October 1 to 7. If ChatGPT visits fell while Direct rose by about the same amount on the same landing pages, a tracking change is the likely cause. Check your product pages on their own.
  2. In Google Search Console, open the Performance report, click the date filter, choose Compare, and set last week against the week before. Google's help page also suggests checking country and device to see whether a drop sits in one place.
  3. Check the Discover and Google News reports apart from regular search. Google only shows those two reports once your site has enough impressions there.
  4. Open your robots.txt file and make sure it doesn't block OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI's FAQ tells publishers to make sure they aren't blocking that crawler so their content can be included in ChatGPT's summaries and snippets.
  5. Ask every new lead how they found you, on the phone or on your contact form. A customer who says "ChatGPT told me about you" is a visit your analytics may have missed.

What can you ignore for now?

Ignore the forum guessing about a core update until Google lists one on its dashboard. A rumor gives you nothing to fix. Ignore third-party visibility scores that climb while your sales stay flat, too. One publisher in the Search Engine Watch report said its Sistrix visibility was "skyrocketing" while actual traffic stayed minimal.

Don't judge ChatGPT by one week of October data either. Search Engine Land's advice is to review referral trends, direct traffic and landing-page performance together before you decide what ChatGPT is worth to you. I'd add one more rule. Watch the leads and sales coming in, because a broken tag can't hide those numbers from you.

One thing you can check this week is whether ChatGPT names your business when buyers ask who to hire. The AI Visibility Tracker checks exactly that in ChatGPT and Perplexity, and its free AI Visibility Check takes about 60 seconds with no credit card. You can run your free check here. FAQ

Why is my ChatGPT traffic showing up as Direct?

Since GPT-6 started rolling out on October 7, 2026, many ChatGPT links went out without the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag or a referrer, so analytics tools counted those visits as Direct. WISLR reports a fix began restoring the tag on October 15, though links still carry no referrer.

Was there a Google update in October 2026?

As of October 19, 2026, Google's Search Status Dashboard lists no October update, per Search Engine Watch. The last listed change was the September 2026 spam update, which finished October 8.

How do I check if my Google traffic dropped?

In Search Console's Performance report, use Compare to set last week against the week before, then check country and device. Look at the Discover and Google News reports on their own.

Should I block OAI-SearchBot?

Not if you want your content included in ChatGPT's answers. OpenAI's publisher FAQ tells publishers to make sure they aren't blocking OAI-SearchBot so content can be included in ChatGPT's summaries and snippets.
